1) What were the various reasons for high anti-Asian sentiment?
To the lower class/working class non-Asians, the primary reason seemed to be that of job security. Asians were cheaper and more efficient — more employable. They might even be seen as the human embodiment of the industrialization factory machines they fear are taking over their traditional trades. To the ruling class, as Tataki would quote, the founding fathers wanted a homogenous race, essentially a “white America” - and the Chinese looked different. While the African-Americans also don’t fit that picture, they remove themselves from the cause by claiming the rights of their slave ancestors for being natives, having served the land.
2) What were the various tactics used to rid of the Chinese communities? (Choose one town and illustrate their method/methods)
In Chico, fear and violence were used. The vigilante labor unions did fire and other damage to the Chinatowns and even threatened to murder John Bidwell. One example was a farmhouse that employed six Chinese workers with hard work that white workers would not want to do. The vigilantes went to the Chinese cabin and shot them all point blank. Unfortunately, the surviving members were unable to testify - though this violence was too extreme - the suspects would eventually be caught.
3) What were the forms of resistance that the Chinese exemplified?
The Chinese bought shotguns and practiced. They built their own water supplies to put out fires. They would protest. And after being burnt down, they would re-build in brick.
4) What was the main reasoning behind the strong Chinese resistance? (Why not just go away?)
As discussed earlier, these sojourners often did not make enough to go back home on par of success. China also had other issues going on. Thus, they had to fight. They realized they have to disrupt their prevalent docile bully-able image by learning how to use weaponry that’s on-par.
